Happy Halloween!!

After lunch today, we got into our costumes and started the festivities with a parade, followed by Halloween activities in our family groupings. I hope everyone has a great night tonight! Just a reminder that there is no school tomorrow.

Non- Fiction Text Features

Our focus during reading groups this week will be non-fiction texts. Understanding text features helps us navigate information more efficiently.

Quality of Life Construction Day

Our prototypes for our "Quality of Life" design challenge are coming along very well. Students were asked to design something that could help improve the quality of life of someone living in their community. Their ideas are amazing  Here are a few pictures of their work so far.

Methods of Joining

Testable Question: Will straw cubes, joined with different connectors, support the same mass?
I can Evaluate the suitability of different materials and designs for their use in a building task.
I can apply procedures to test different designs.
I can apply procedures to test the strength of different methods of joining.

Emotion Explosions

Today we brainstormed different ways to calm our bodies and minds. Here are some strategies that students came up with during our conversation:

- Taking deep breaths
- Taking 5 (away from the situation)
- Cuddles with animals
- Talk with others who feel the same
- Squeezing a ball
- Use a comfort item ( blanket, stuffy)
- Go to a safe space  ( my bedroom etc.)
- Listen to music
- Exercise- go for a walk
- Have something to eat

- Watch or read something funny

Testing Shapes of Pillars

We continued our study of testing materials and designs in Science today.

Here was our testable question:

Will a triangular-shaped pillar support more mass than a rectangular or cylindrical shaped pillar?

Here are a few Hypotheses:

"I think the triangle will hold the most mass because I learned that a triangle is the strongest shape."
- Lawrence

"I think the square will hold more because they are very strong and have a lot of edges and corners."
- Emma

"I think the triangle will hold the most mass because I learned in grade 2 that most buildings have triangles on them."
- Sebastian

"I think the cylinder will hold more because there is just enough space and I think maybe it's good because it has round edges, which makes it easy to stay up."
- Magnolia

" I think the triangle will hold the most mass because they use triangles to support the big structures in buildings."
- Kate

" I think that the triangle will hold more mass because almost all the bridges that I've seen have been held up by triangles."
- Jaycee

"I think the cylinder will hold more because it doesn't have edges, so it won't flatten out when you apply mass. "
- Levi

Studio Bell Trip

Even though today didn't go as planned, our visit to Studio Bell didn't disappoint. Students had a great time taking part in a scavenger hunt, where they were able to explore all the amazing exhibits the museum had to offer. A highlight was definitely the Kimball Theatre Organ performance. Here are a few pictures from our day!

A futuristic instrument

Students got to explore and try out many different instruments.

Inspiration for designing an instrument!
